A mysterious stranger brings a dying man back from the edge of death — but what will be the price?

One of the crows flapped onto the end of the bench and stood peering at him sideways for a long moment. This was a handsome bird, larger than the others, its glossy black plumage reflecting an oily iridescence in the directionless white light. When the walker reached the crest of the knoll, the crow made a harsh clacking noise and sprang into the air and flapped out of sight.

The woman had the bland oval face of Botticelli’s Venus, but instead of rising nude from a scallop shell, she was standing in the wet grass in a pair of white mukluks and a quilted Patagonia ski suit of the palest possible blue. Her hair was paper-white, long and slightly wavy, pinned back from her equally white face but allowed to cascade down her back. Her beautiful gray eyes were totally devoid of expression.
Her lips were sewn shut with thick black thread.
